AUSTRALIAN PONY

Australia's very own pony! The APSB Australian Pony has been developed here over almost two hundred years to suit the Australian conditions and requirements. And, as you would expect, there are far more of this breed in Australia than any other.

Within the bloodlines of the APSB Australian Pony can be found the best of the Welsh ponies, Hackneys and other British pony breeds, the Hungarian Pony, Thoroughbred and Arab. By careful selection of breeding stock, breeders in past decades have drawn on the better points of all of these breeds to produce a pony that is the equal of any in the world today.

Stud book registration of the APSB Australian Pony commenced on the 25th. of September 1931 with the establishment of the Australian Pony Stud Book Society (APSB Soc.) in the offices of the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales. Now some of the ponies being shown have five or six generations of pure Australian Pony blood.

The Aussie Pony can truly be described as the all-round pony, being any height up to 14 hands and suited to either saddle or harness. It is well known for its combination of good looks, good action, good conformation and good sense. In the showring in WA, the Australian Pony has a record second to none.

In recent years the APSB Australian Pony has been repaying its debt to other breeds by providing foundation stock for many other breeds. For example, the APSB Australian Pony has been used for the upgrading of Welsh ponies, Connemaras, Australian Stud Saddle ponies and the Riding Pony of Australia.
